ANNOUNCING THE 2016-2017 SCENIES

StageSceneLA is proud to announce the12th-annual SCENIES, presented each fall to the previous twelve months’ (September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017) most outstanding theater companies, productions, performances, direction, choreography, musical direction, & designs. Out of over 250 productions reviewed, these are the year’s most memorable achievements in Southern California theater.


Congratulations to all of the Faculty and Alumni who received awards for their work. Here are some of the many AMDA Faculty members who accolades.  


Thomas O’leary director of “33 Variations” (Actors Co-op) for BEST PRODUCTION (PLAY) and OUTSTANDING DIRECTION (Drama, Intimate Theater).

Brian Abraham in “Zoot Suit” (Mark Taper Forum) for BEST ENSEMBLE CAST PERFORMANCE and BEST PRODUCTION (PLAY).

Wendy Rosoff director of “Hairspray” for OUTSTANDING DIRECTION (Musical, Larger Theater) and also for her performance in “Promises, Promises” OUTSTANDING ENSEMBLE CAST PERFORMANCE (Concert Staged Reading).

Nick DeGruccio for “Carrie The Musical”, “The Last Five Years” receiving the award for OUTSTANDING DIRECTION (MULTIPLE PRODUCTIONS).

Yusuf Nasir for “Once On This Island”; OUTSTANDING CHOREOGRAPHY (Larger Theater).

Hector Guerrero for “Evita”; OUTSTANDING CHOREOGRAPHY (Larger Theater).

Cheryl Baxter for “Evita”; OUTSTANDING CHOREOGRAPHY (Larger Theater).

Nick Petrillo for “Hairspray”; OUTSTANDING MUSICAL DIRECTION (Larger Theater).

Dylan Price for “33 Variations”; OUTSTANDING MUSICAL DIRECTION & SOLO ACCOMPANIMENT.

Richard Israel received DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR for his productions of “Our Town”, “Promises, Promises”, and  “West Side Story”.

Scott Harlan for “Promises, Promises” for OUTSTANDING ENSEMBLE CAST PERFORMANCE (Concert Staged Reading).

Leslie Stevens for “Promises, Promises” for OUTSTANDING ENSEMBLE CAST PERFORMANCE (Concert Staged Reading).

Nancy Dobbs Owen for “Welcome to the White Room” for OUTSTANDING Choreography in a Play (assisted by AMDA Alum Ana Cardenas).
